Hello there. This is Elly. This week, we’d like to upload special version from Morioka-city in Iwate-prefecture. This week’s topic is ‘Wanko-soba.’ If you introduce this special dish to your foreign friends, you reputation among them will go up. This time I will try ‘Wando-soba’ myself and will get glutted. By the way, have you ever tried ‘Wanko-soba’ yourself?

 

実は、冷たい蕎麦は私の大好きな日本食です。わんこ蕎麦も同じですよね?

Actually cold Zaru Soba is my favorite Japanese food. Is it like that?

 

そうですか。　「 わんこそば 」 は小さなお椀に入ったそばを食べ放題で食べる、大食い挑戦のような食事です。

Yes, the ‘Wanko-soba’ is like eating contest eating soba noodle, using very small bowl.  You can eat as much as you can by refilling your bowl with the noodle.

 

最初に払った料金で、いくらでも食べられるなんてバイキングのようで面白いですね。　でも小さなお椀だとすぐに食べてしまうので、おかわりするのが面倒くさそうですね。

Paying once in advance and eating soba in an all-you-can-eat buffet style sounds interesting. I’d like to eat a hundred. I Love soba. But if the bowl is small, ordering another bowl could get tedious if you eat a hundred, don’t you think?

 

「 わんこそば 」 を食べる時には、お客さんの横には専任の給仕さんがついていて、お椀が空になったら、電光石火でお椀にそばをつぎ足すんです。　お替りを頼まなくても、給仕さんが勝手にそばを入れてくれます。　お椀に入ったそばは残さず食べなければなりません。

When you start eating Wanko-soba, a server serves each guest and upon the guest eat up the noodle, the server instantly fill up your empty bowl with another noodle.  You don’t have chance to order  since the server quickly refill each time your bowl becomes empty.   You have to eat up the noodle completely if the noodle is once served.

 

専任の給仕さんがいて、お椀にそばを入れてくれるなんて、素晴らしいサービスですね。さすがおもてなしの国日本です。

A server standing by and serving you the whole time sounds wonderful.  I’m so impressed by the Omotenashi “nothing more you can think of wanting” spirit of Japan!

 

実はそのサービスが恐ろしいサービスなんですよ(笑)　。　この「 わんこそば 」 はまんぷくになって、『 もうお代わりは要りませんよ! 』 という場合には、お椀に蓋をしたら終了となります。　それで「 わんこそば 」 は終了します。

Well, actually Wanco-soba service is rather awful.  If you become full and do not want any more, you just have to lid your bowl. Then, Wanko-soba finishes.

 

じゃあ食事を終了したくなったら、蓋をすればいいのですね。　実に簡単なことで、恐ろしいサービスでもなんでもないですね。

Putting the lid on your bowl when you don’t want any more is simple.    ‘Not bad’ service!

 

ところが給仕さんが、蓋をさせてくれないんです。　　客が食べ終わった瞬間に、給仕さんは電光石火の速さでお椀にそばを入れます。　お椀に蓋をする時間を与えてくれません。　お椀にそばを入れられたら、そのそばを食べ終えるまでは蓋をしてはいけないのです。

Things are not that simple, the server serves as quick as lightening.  You don’t have chance to lid your bowl.  If another noodle is served, you just cannot lid until you empty your bowl.

 

それじゃまるでゲームかスポーツの試合みたいですね。　給仕さんがそばを入れるのが早いか、客が蓋をするのが早いか、勝負なんですね。

Then it’s like a video game.  It’s a race between the server and the guest: the server tries to serve you more noodles before you can put the lid on your empty bowl.

 

そうなんです。　単なる大食いではなく、ゲーム性のある食事という事で 「 わんこそば 」 は人気なんです。　外国人もこの食事を知ったら、とても人気が出ると思いますので外国人と英会話する際には、ぜひこの 「 わんこそば 」 の話を伝えてみてください。

Right.  Wanko-soba is very popular because you can eat as much as you like and also you race with your server during eating. If a foreigner might know about this, they’d love Wanko-soba.  I wish you’d spread this unique story of Wanko-soba when you speak with foreign people in English.

それは普通の蕎麦屋でたべる 「 もりそば 」　にしたら、何枚分にになるんですか?

135!!! Wow. How many dishes of Mori-soba noodles at an ordinary soba restaurant do you think 135 bowls of Wanko-soba can be compared to?

 

ここ有名店の東屋さんでは、わんこそば１５杯で、普通のもりそば１枚と教えています。　だからわんこそばの135杯は、もりそば９枚分になります。

I’m now at the famous Wanko-soba restraunt, ‘Azuma-ya.’  According to Azuma-ya-san, 15 bowls of Wanko-soba noodle is equivalent to one dish of ordinary Mori-soba noodle.  So 135 bowls of Wanko-soba is equivalent to 9 dishes of ordinaly Mori-soba noodle.

 

よくそんなに食べられましたね。

How can you eat that much? You must have special separate Soba stomach!
